Rioja Wine Tasting
For our next wine tasting event on Tuesday 17th July 7pm we’re thrilled to welcome Carlos Rubio Villanua, winemaker at Don Jacobo winery, Rioja, Spain for a very special evening of Rioja wines paired with new White Horse sharing plates. The winery are celebrating 120 years this year and produce a variety of crisp whites through to oak aged reds.
Rioja is Spain’s fine wine capital, producing their flagship wines, mainly from Tempranillo & Garnacha & the region is characterised by rich tradition & vibrant innovation. Rioja has a wonderful variety of styles with the geography of the area a contributing factor. The area spans a terrain that stretches 75 miles from north-west to south-east resulting in diverse climates, topography and soil types – all of which further influence quality and wine style.
The four wines we will explore include Viura Rioja Blanco, Tempranillo Blanco Rioja, Rioja Crianza, and Vine Roots Old Vine Garnacha. Below gives more information on each grape variety:-
Tempranillo - Considered indigenous of Rioja, it is the most characteristic variety of this denomination & one of the great noble varieties of the world. It occupies more than 75% of the cultivated area & is very versatile, able to produce wines with long aging with a smooth & fruity palate which evolves when it ages.
Garnacha - Variety of Spanish origin that occupies the largest surface in the world & in Rioja complements Tempranillo for it’s aromatic & body characteristics. Rich in extract & with good alcohol content, the wine produced depends heavily on the environmental conditions & cultivation.
Tempranillo Blanco - This variety comes from the natural genetic mutation from a single branch of strain of Tempranillo Tinto, located in 1988 in an old vineyard of Murillo del Rio Leza (La Rioja). Their wines have high acidity with fruity aromas.
Viura - The main white variety cultivated in Rioja, it is more productive than red varieties & offers fruity wines with a floral aroma & with a remarkable degree of acidity, ideal for maing both young & aging whites. This aging in wood is the traditional way of making Rioja white wine. Viura is better known in Spain as Macabeo.
Your host Carlos will guide you through each wine with each glass paired with our new sharing plates. This event is complimentary & to request your tickets email firstname.lastname@example.org
